Field Sobriety Tests (FSTs)
A field sobriety test is a tool that law enforcement officers use in order to determine whether a person may be intoxicated. After an officer has observed behavior by a driver which indicates that he or she may be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (such as swerving, speeding, ignoring traffic signals, driving too slow), the officer will pull the driver over and administer several tests to further determine whether the driver is impaired by drug or alcohol use.
After the officer pulls you over, he or she may check to see if you smell of alcohol, if your eyes are bloodshot or if your speech is slurred. He or she may then administer a field sobriety test. There are three tests which are most commonly used in California:
- Walk and turn: walk in a straight line, heel to toe, turn and walk the other way
- One leg stand: stand on one leg, with the other raised slightly off the ground
- Horizontal gaze nystagmus: follow a light or object with your eyes
